Publications

In 2006, we launched a series of monographs that
tell stories about life in Old Lyme.

Poverty Island (published in 2006)    Written by Neri A. Clark, this is a memoir of a young man’s adventures and hard times on a 500-acre island
off Griswold Point during the Great Depression. Illustrations were provided by Old Lyme artist Catherine Christiano.

This Ancient and Interesting Town
(published in 2007)   This is a reprint of an 1876 article (author unknown), originally published in Harper’s magazine, that recounts Old Lyme’s history through anecdotes about many of its prominent residents.

Both monographs are for sale at The Turning Page, in the Old Lyme Marketplace. The bookstore also sells note cards printed with Catherine Christiano’s illustrations for Poverty Island.

Additional subjects scheduled for the monograph series include:

The 1938 Hurricane.     Planned in tandem with an exhibition of photographs, newspaper articles, letters, and personal accounts, this monograph will commemorate the 70th anniversary of the hurricane that caused major property damage in Old Lyme, especially its beaches. Publication date: September 2008.

Landsavers of Old Lyme.     This publication, to be prepared in cooperation with local conservation trusts and the Florence Griswold Museum, will be an overview of the town's open space resources and how they came to be set aside in the first place. Publication date: spring 2009.
