The gravestone pictured above is that of Reverend Moses Noyes,
the first minister of the Old Lyme Congregational Church. It Has
been replaced, and the original now resides n an
historical display at the church. The Noyes family arranged for
the replacement, noting that time and acid rain were taking
its toll on the original stone. You can click on the picture

The tour included a stop at Ely Cemetery in Lyme, where the gravestone epitaph of William Ely reads, “He was the first amongst us to free his slaves.” For more information on the topic of slaves who were kept in our region, visit our Links page.
